Event 19 Rumours

The religious group that entered the Zone a few weeks back seems to have set up shop in an old church. Quite how such a prime site came to be unoccupied is the subject of some speculation. The Church of England deconsecrated many sites during the initial evacuation, but a church is a church. They haven't really done much in the way of evangelising but a couple of freelancers who claim to have spoken with the group say they believe the Zone itself to be the second coming of Christ in some fashion. Details are sketchy.

There has been a very strange calm across the Zone. With Elias dead and the mass execution of government agents within the factions, things have returned to whatever passes for normal. Freelancers carry out contracts, corporations take their revenge, all is well with the world. An awful lot of freelancers are occupying their downtime with a single question though, “what's next?”. Everyone knows there's going to be a response from MI5, MI7, the military or all three at once, but no-one has any idea what the response will be.

The hunt goes on for whoever it is that has a defence against the Red Sky. Most fingers point in the direction of various different corporations, but those in the know point out that there is a faction that is rumoured to have significant manufacturing capability. Once identified, the group making the cure can expect significant interest, both financial and criminal.

The latest High Roller venture seems to be some kind of freelancer hotel. The food is reportedly pretty good, the beds are better than most bars, and there's a decent supply of booze. They seem to be operating on a barter system, with data, technology and decent weapon parts buying different lengths of stay.

After Action Report

And then there were 2.

Since the creation of the Zone and its evolution as a place of dubious employment, there have been four bars. Last year, Elias blew one of them apart. Rumours suggest they are rebuilding, but it isn't open yet. Within the last few days the most southern of the bars was also destroyed.

The difference this time is that there isn't a clear story about what happened. The building blew up, of that there's no doubt, but the how and why is the subject of a flurry of rumours. Some say the bar was attacked and destroyed, with the Manor Hosue Mob being the most frequently named of the potential aggressors. Some say that a piece of technology recovered by freelancers was volatile and caused the blast. Others think there are still remnants of the Elias movement out there.

And then there were 3.

The rumour that the bar was hit by the Manor House Mob is further fuelled by the revelation that they are going into business themselves. They have set up a second location from which they intend to run The Gatehouse, a labour exchange and bar much in the fashion of all the other bars. For some, this represents a second (or third, or fourth…) chance to make something of themselves in the Zone after exile from their original bar, for others it becomes a new hub for trade and information exchange.

None of the factions have said much of anything, but no said they will be making overtures to this new bar to hire freelancers, run recruitment and establish lines of credit for their operations. Patient politics ahead for many it would seem…
