The soil in this anomaly is saturated with a biological accelerant of some kind. As a result the plant life in the anomaly (predominantly grass) grows and decays at a phenomenal rate. The speed and nature of the decay causes rapid fermentation of the decaying matter, saturating the air above the ground with alcohol vapour. Test subjects reported severe drunkenness within about 30 seconds. Based on scans and test data it would appear lethal alcohol poisoning would occur within about 90 seconds.

It is now known that the alcohol produced will dissolve in water but then dissipates extremely quickly. Whilst this renders the alcohol useless for human consumption it might serve as a means of purifying water. Running water passing through the anomaly came out the other side significantly cleaner, with most of the biological contaminants typical to the Zone removed.
